Current Opportunities at Arun Community Transport

*New Vacancies*

Chairperson - Trustee

Location: Hybrid - Littlehampton Office and Remote

About us

Arun Community Transport (ACT) exists for one simple but powerful reason: without accessible transport, people become isolated. ACT has a crucial role in helping improve the lives of residents across 24 Towns and Parishes that make up the Arun District.

Since 2018, we have provided a vital network of volunteer drivers across 24 Town and Parishes in the Arun District, from Ferring in the east to Selsey in the west and north to Arundel. We support elderly and less able residents to attend hospital and GP appointments, as well as social journeys such as shopping and hair appointments. For many of our passengers, our drivers are more than transport, they are a lifeline.

Transport exclusion affects older people, disabled residents, rural communities and those on lower incomes. Without reliable options, individuals can miss medical appointments, become socially isolated and lose independence.

We are now seeking a Chairperson to join the board of trustees and support the next phase of our development.

We are looking for an entrepreneurial, experienced and transparent leader with a track record of working either as a trustee or board level leader in the public or private sector. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to shape the future of an organisation that makes a tangible difference every single day.

The Opportunity

As Chairperson, you will provide strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees and ensure strong governance, accountability and long-term sustainability.

  • Lead and Chair Board meetings, ensuring effective decision-making and constructive challenging.

  • Act as a figurehead for the charity (for example, representing it at functions, meetings or in the press).

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight, safeguarding the charity’s mission and values.

  • Have oversight and ensure the financial stability of the organisation.

  • Support and guide the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Ensure robust governance, compliance and risk management.

  • Oversee financial stewardship alongside the Treasurer and wider Board.

  • Act as an ambassador for ACT within the community and with key stakeholders.

  • Support income generation efforts at a strategic level.

  • Encourage a positive, collaborative and high-performing Board culture

  • Ensure the Board operates in line with Charity Commission requirements and best practice.

The Chairperson does not manage day-to-day operations but works in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure clarity of strategy, accountability and long-term impact. We anticipate a minimum of 2 days per month for the role on a voluntary basis.

The Impact You Will Make

Under your guidance, ACT will:

  • Strengthen and sustain its core service

  • Develop new initiatives such as social and shopping trips

  • Recruit and retain more volunteer drivers

  • Deepen partnerships across towns and parishes

  • Secure funding for core costs, growth and vehicle maintenance

Volunteer Opportunities

Drivers

We need to recruit more drivers to continue meeting the increasing demands for our service. Drivers use their own vehicles, and the charity will carry out a DBS (Police Check). Most insurers recognise the value of community transport and include this at no additional cost.

Drivers are paid mileage for their trips at 45p a mile, with a minimum payment of £5.00 paid.

We are looking for drivers who can offer regular days each week or month.

Whatever time you can give will be much appreciated.

Office Team

We are looking for volunteers to strengthen our existing office team. The role is varied but could include, answering

the telephone and processing information onto our booking system, updating our social media platforms, support our charity in running our funding events and recruitment fairs to promote our service and be involved in funding bids.

Full training will be given.

Patience is the most important skill needed, as some of our clients need a bit of time and support when arranging their trips.

The office is open from 8.30 to 1pm Monday to Friday. Any time you can give is a value to our service.

If you think that this may be something you could do, or if you are interested in having more information, please contact:

Trustees

The trustees have strategic control of the charity as a corporate body.

We have four meetings a year.  Trustees are encouraged to visit and help in the daily operation of the charity.

No specialist knowledge is needed, just an interest in helping us run our charity.
